During your visit to the Memorial, don’t miss the opportunity to experience the battlefield before, during and after the fighting in a completely different way thanks to a virtual reality headset. The application, based on 3D modelling and animations with sound effects, brings the three periods in the Verdun Battlefield’s history to life.
The scenario
Looking down from an observation balloon, see the Verdun Battlefield at three different times and notice how it changes: in August 1914 a few days after the order for general mobilisation, on 23 October 1916 and then in the 1920s when the Douaumont Ossuary was built.
- During the initial scenes, you will see the countryside as it would have looked at the beginning of the twentieth century: a rural landscape dotted with military fortifications.
- As the images advance, you find yourself plunged into a horrific tableau, as the shells rain down in autumn 1916. All around you, the landscape is desolate, with the villages in ruins and the forests battered and burned.
- The final part of your voyage through time takes you to the 1920s, after the war was over. You will witness how monuments were built on the Verdun battlefield, the most famous among them the Douaumont Ossuary, which rose up in the midst of a wasteland.
VR experience by Studio 3WG
Studio 3WG was founded in 2009 by Jimmy Fischer in Altwies, Luxembourg. It is a major player in the creation and development of interactive media, ranging from smartphone games via interactive installations to virtual reality experiences. Having made a name for themselves in video gaming and industry, the team saw the potential their skills had for the heritage sector. Through the projects they develop for unique sites, they work to create new experiences that “bring history to life” and leave visitors with spectacular memories. Each experience created by Studio 3WG uses interactive media for entertainment, cultural transmission and/or educational purposes.
This project was co-funded by the European Union and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
