The institution

Verdun Memorial – Battlefield is structed as an Établissement Public de Coopération Culturel (EPCC - Public Institution for Cultural Cooperation). Its purpose is to manage and run Verdun Memorial, Fort Douaumont and Fort Vaux and to shape remembrance, culture and tourism policy for the Verdun Battlefield.

Board of Directors

Through its deliberations, the Board of Directors controls the institution’s affairs. For example, it deliberates on the general direction of the institution’s policy, which is expressed as a cultural project focusing on the transmission of collective memory, policy on the acquisition of pieces of heritage intended to become part of the institution’s collection, the budget, the entry prices and pricing strategy for cultural and events services. The Chair of the Board of Directors is Jérôme Dumont, Chair of the Meuse Departmental Council.

Specialist Steering Committee

In 2006, a Specialist Steering Committee (Comité d'Orientation Scientifique or COS) was set up within the Memorial to reinforce its status as a place for specialist research and debate.
It was this specialist committee that devised the strategy for the new “memorial-museum”, based on three priorities:

  • a museum commemorating a French and German battle, and not a battle viewed primarily from a French viewpoint,
  • at the heart of the battlefield,
  • desired and established by Verdun veterans as a Memorial.
