From Verdun to Caen, the archaeology of contemporary wars in the light of history

Organised by the Eastern Region Cultural Affairs Directorate (DRAC) – Heritage Unit – Metz Regional Archaeological Department

Colloque De Verdun à Caen. L'archéologie des conflits contemporains : méthodes, apports et enjeux

What should happen to the remains and objects from contemporary wars in France that are both archaeological exhibits and military relics?

After four years of events commemorating the centenary of the Great War, this seminar will address the problems posed by the proliferation of items from contemporary wars, particularly the First World War. What approach should be taken to the sites mentioned and well documented in archives, sometimes with photographs and often already covered by historians? What need is there to keep these objects, usually manufactured, reproducible and found in great numbers? What should be done with private, personal and even intimate items.

This seminar will be in two parts. The first part will take place at the Verdun Memorial on 11, 12 and 13 October 2018, and will explore the issues raised by the archaeology of contemporary war through several examples in France and Lorraine. The second part, on 27, 28 and 29 March 2019 at the Caen Memorial, will look to the future and the direction to be taken by multi-disciplinary research.

Through these discussions, the principles will be established for sustainably managing this archaeological heritage, looking beyond commemorations and involving all stakeholders in the heritage chain.
